Dan Trachtenberg's 2016 thriller opens after a catastrophic car crash: a young woman wakes in a survivalist's underground bunker, where he insists he has saved her from an apocalyptic attack that has made the outside world uninhabitable. Whether to believe him becomes the film's tightening screw. Blending drama, horror and science fiction, it works mostly as a confined chamber piece, trading on unease, shifting power and the question of which threat is real. Lean and controlled, it favours suspense over spectacle. Best suited to viewers who enjoy claustrophobic, single-location thrillers and don't mind not knowing whom to trust until late.
