When cops Schmidt and Jenko join the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover as high school students. They trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, and set out to shut down a dangerous drug ring. Phil Lord repurposes a dusty 1980s TV premise into a self-aware buddy comedy that keeps winking at its own absurdity. Two mismatched young cops go undercover at a high school to break up a drug ring, only to find the social hierarchy has flipped since their own awkward teenage years.
