This 2014 action-war spectacle runs parallel to the earlier Spartan saga, shifting attention to the Greek general Themistocles as he tries to unite a fractured Greece against a Persian invasion. Director Noam Murro keeps the stylized, blood-spattered, slow-motion aesthetic and stages much of the conflict at sea, pitting Themistocles against the god-king Xerxes and Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy. It's built for viewers who came for the operatic violence and heightened visual style rather than historical nuance, and it foregrounds a formidable antagonist. If you enjoyed the muscular, comic-book take on antiquity and want naval carnage on the same canvas, this is squarely aimed at you.
