Our take on Alien Resurrection

Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, this 1997 entry in the Alien saga leaps two centuries ahead: scientists clone the long-dead Ripley to breed the ultimate weapon, and the resurrected woman proves as unpredictable as the creatures she's tied to. Jeunet brings a grotesque, almost carnival sensibility to the sci-fi horror, all wet corridors and bodily strangeness, as Ripley joins a crew of smugglers to stop the aliens reaching Earth. It suits fans who want the franchise's dread laced with dark, off-kilter humor and a more surreal visual palette. Newcomers may want the earlier films first, but genre lovers will find a strange, committed take.
