Our take on Amélie

Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 romantic comedy follows Amélie, a shy young woman working in a tiny Parisian café who stumbles onto a knack for quietly improving the lives of those around her. She becomes a secret matchmaker, guardian angel and general do-gooder, until a chance encounter with a handsome stranger tests whether she can step into her own love story. Jeunet wraps it all in a warm, whimsical, storybook version of Paris, full of small delights and playful visual invention. It's a gentle, feel-good film for viewers who enjoy charm, imagination and a light touch. Sentimental in the best sense, it makes ordinary kindness feel enchanting.
