Our take on Annihilation

Alex Garland's 2018 film sends a biologist on a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the ordinary laws of nature no longer hold. From that spare setup it builds a work of eerie, cerebral horror and science fiction, more interested in dread, transformation and unanswered questions than in reassurance. The imagery is strange and unsettling, the pacing deliberate, the mood closer to a waking nightmare than a monster movie. It rewards viewers who welcome ambiguity and want to linger over what they've seen; those needing tidy explanations may leave frustrated. Watch it attentively, ideally in the dark, and let its unease work on you slowly.
