Spike Lee's 2018 mix of comedy, crime, drama and history unfolds in Colorado Springs in the late 1970s, where Ron Stallworth, an African American police officer, and Flip Zimmerman, his Jewish colleague, run an undercover operation to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. The premise is almost too outrageous to be true, and Lee mines it for both sharp satire and genuine tension as the two men divide one identity between them. It's provocative, funny and pointed, using a period story to speak plainly about race and hatred. Best for viewers who like political filmmaking with bite, tonal boldness, and a director unafraid to connect past and present.
