Our take on Blood Diamond
Edward Zwick's 2006 thriller sets its story against the civil war tearing through 1999 Sierra Leone, binding a hardened mercenary-turned-smuggler to a fisherman desperate to recover both a fortune-making pink diamond and his son, conscripted as a child soldier. It's a propulsive, morally charged adventure that uses its treasure-hunt engine to confront the human cost of conflict minerals, keeping the action pointed rather than escapist. The pacing is relentless and the backdrop unflinching about violence and complicity. It suits viewers who want a gripping thriller with a conscience, comfortable with harsh subject matter in service of a genuine argument. Come for the chase, leave thinking about where the sparkle comes from.
