Our take on Captain America: The First Avenger

Joe Johnston's 2011 origin story turns Steve Rogers, a sickly young man from Brooklyn, into the super-soldier Captain America during World War II. Determined to serve, he becomes the war effort's most unlikely weapon and must stop the Red Skull, Hitler's ruthless head of weaponry, whose organization plans to harness a mysterious device of untold power for world domination. As action, adventure and science-fiction, it embraces a period, pulp-serial spirit, pairing earnest heroism with wartime adventure rather than modern cynicism. The tone is straightforward and old-fashioned in the best sense. It suits viewers who enjoy classic hero journeys and anyone wanting the starting point of this superhero saga.
