Henry Selick's 2009 stop-motion fantasy follows 11-year-old Coraline, who, wandering her rambling old house in a dull new town, finds a hidden door to a strangely idealized version of her life. To stay in that fantasy, she must make a frighteningly real sacrifice. It's a handcrafted family film with a genuine undercurrent of unease, using tactile animation and eerie design to explore the seductive danger of getting exactly what you wish for. The uncanny alternate world is beautiful and quietly menacing at once. Best for older children and adults who like their fairy tales shadowy, it rewards viewers drawn to imaginative craft, gothic atmosphere and stories where wanting more carries a cost.
