About Cowboys & Aliens

A stranger stumbles into the desert town of Absolution with no memory of his past and a futuristic shackle around his wrist. Our take on Cowboys & Aliens

Jon Favreau's 2011 mashup does exactly what its title promises, welding the dusty grammar of the western to a science-fiction invasion picture. A stranger wakes in the town of Absolution with no memory and a strange metal shackle on his wrist, and soon an uneasy alliance of cowboys, outlaws and Apache warriors forms against an enemy from beyond. With Ella and the hard-nosed Colonel Dolarhyde at his side, the setup leans on action and thriller beats rather than deep character study. It suits viewers who enjoy genre collisions and don't mind a straight-faced blend of six-shooters and spaceships, delivered with old-fashioned frontier swagger.
