Our take on Dark Shadows

Tim Burton's 2012 fantasy comedy revives an old gothic soap opera as a fish-out-of-water romp: a vampire sealed in his tomb wakes up in 1972 and returns to his ancestral manor to find his family and fortune in decay. The setup leans on Burton's familiar tastes—shadowy interiors, deadpan macabre humor and a hero comically baffled by lava lamps and the modern world. It plays best for viewers who enjoy the director's arch style and a horror-tinged comedy that favors mood and gags over scares. If you like ornate production design and camp more than tension, this offbeat period piece is an easy, playful watch.
