Paul W. S. Anderson's 2008 action science-fiction unfolds on Terminal Island in a near-future 2020, where a crowded US prison system has been handed to the Weyland Corporation, which turns its inmates into gladiators for a televised bloodsport. Adrenalized convicts, an armored arena and an audience hungry for carnage combine into the brutal 'Death Race'. The film is engineered around vehicular mayhem, hard-edged violence and a bleak, industrial dystopian look. Substance takes a back seat to velocity and spectacle.
