About District 9

Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth. Not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens' welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.

Our take on District 9

Neill Blomkamp's 2009 science-fiction film imagines aliens arriving on Earth three decades earlier not as conquerors but as refugees from a dying world, corralled into a squalid South African zone called District 9. A corporation charged with managing them cares little for their welfare and much for their advanced weaponry. When a company field agent is infected by a substance that begins rewriting his DNA, District 9 becomes his only refuge. Shot in a raw, documentary-inflected style, it blends kinetic action with pointed social allegory. If you appreciate sci-fi that uses spectacle to probe prejudice and exploitation, it's a bracing watch. Its grime and intensity aren't for the squeamish.
