Our take on Divergent

Neil Burger's 2014 science-fiction adventure imagines a society split into factions defined by personality, where teenager Tris discovers she's Divergent, unable to be sorted and therefore seen as a threat. When she uncovers a plot to eliminate people like her, she and the guarded Four must learn why Divergents endanger the system before it closes in. Built on a young-adult template, it mixes identity, rebellion and first romance with brisk action and a stylized dystopia. It suits younger viewers and fans of faction-based fantasy who enjoy a spirited heroine finding her footing. Those weary of dystopian formulas may find it familiar, but Divergent delivers accessible, propulsive escapism.
