Mike Flanagan's 2019 horror follows a grown, scarred Dan Torrance, still haunted by the childhood ordeal he survived at the Overlook Hotel. When he meets Abra, a brave teenager with a powerful psychic gift called the "shine," he's drawn back toward the darkness he tried to leave behind. Flanagan favors slow-building character work, grief and addiction over cheap jolts, weaving supernatural fantasy into a story about trauma passed down and confronted. It suits viewers who like their horror thoughtful, emotional and patient rather than relentless, and who appreciate a tale about wounded people finding purpose. Fans of King's world and of atmospheric, melancholy scares will find plenty to sink into here.
