Our take on Dunkirk

Christopher Nolan's 2017 war film recounts the desperate evacuation of Allied soldiers trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk in late May and early June 1940. Cut off and surrounded by the German army, troops from Britain, France, Canada and Belgium wait under fire for rescue across the Channel. Nolan strips the story of speeches and backstory, favouring sensation over exposition and letting sound, space and ticking time carry the dread. Blending action and drama into something closer to sustained tension, it plays as an experience of endurance rather than heroics. It suits viewers open to an immersive, largely wordless account of survival, and who value craft, scale and mounting pressure over conventional storytelling.
