Our take on Edge of Tomorrow
Doug Liman's 2014 science-fiction action film runs on a lethal loop. Major Bill Cage, an officer who has never fought, is abruptly demoted and thrown into combat against an alien invasion, where he dies within minutes. Killing an enemy in the process traps him in a time loop that resets him to the same morning again and again, forcing him to fight and fall repeatedly until repetition becomes skill. The premise turns dying into a mechanism for learning, giving the action a puzzle-like rhythm and grim humour. It suits viewers who like their sci-fi kinetic and cleverly structured, and who enjoy watching a reluctant soldier grind his way from liability to weapon.
