David Ayer's 2012 crime thriller rides along with two young Los Angeles patrol officers marked for death after a routine traffic stop turns up a cache of cash and firearms belonging to a notorious cartel. Ayer shoots much of it in a raw, handheld, found-footage style that puts you inside the squad car, and the film's real strength is the easy, profane friendship between its two leads, which grounds the escalating danger in something human. It suits viewers who want gritty street-level crime driven by camaraderie rather than plot mechanics, and who can stomach sudden brutal violence. Sharp, tense and surprisingly warm between the bloodshed.
