Our take on Eyes Wide Shut

Stanley Kubrick's final film, released in 1999, is a hypnotic mystery-drama about desire, jealousy and the fragile pacts of marriage. After his wife Alice confesses to fantasizing about a man she once met, Dr. Bill Harford spirals into an obsessive nocturnal odyssey that leads him to an unsettling underground gathering, where he quickly realizes he is out of his depth. Kubrick moves at a deliberate, dreamlike pace, favoring atmosphere, ritual and unease over conventional thrills. It rewards patient viewers drawn to psychological ambiguity and immaculate control of image and sound, not those seeking brisk plotting. Enigmatic and coldly beautiful, it lingers long after its final scene.
