Our take on Fifty Shades of Grey
Sam Taylor-Johnson's 2015 erotic drama introduces Anastasia Steele, a college senior who fills in to interview the enigmatic and immensely wealthy businessman Christian Grey. An unexpected attraction pulls them together, and though sexually inexperienced, Ana enters an affair that leads her into Christian's world, where the boundaries of pain and pleasure are tested. The film trades on glossy production, simmering push-and-pull and frank sensuality aimed squarely at adult viewers. Fans of steamy, character-driven romance with a controlling, mysterious lead will find what they came for; those wanting layered drama or subtlety may feel underserved. Strictly for grown-up audiences comfortable with explicit intimacy and a provocative central relationship.
