Our take on First Blood

Ted Kotcheff's 1982 action thriller sends former Green Beret John Rambo drifting into a small town, where harassment by local law enforcement and an arrest for vagrancy push a damaged veteran past his breaking point. Forced into the surrounding mountains, he wages an escalating one-man war against his pursuers. Beneath the wilderness action is a bruised portrait of a soldier the country no longer knows what to do with, giving the survival scenes an unexpected weight. It's tense, physical and angrier than its reputation suggests. Watch it if you want action rooted in character and a quieter tragedy under the manhunt. Rambo is leaner and sadder than the sequels it launched.
