Ivan Reitman's 1989 sequel brings the paranormal exterminators back into business. The discovery of a massive underground river of ectoplasm, coupled with a fresh surge of spectral activity, gives the disbanded Ghostbusters the reason and the crisis they need to reopen their doors. Sticking to its comedy-and-fantasy roots, the film pairs supernatural threats with deadpan wisecracks and the easy chemistry of a team back in familiar gear. It doesn't reinvent the formula so much as revisit it. It's a comfortable choice for fans of the original who want more of the same tone, and for viewers happy with lighthearted ghost-chasing that keeps its scares firmly playful.
