Our take on Gladiator

Ridley Scott's 2000 historical epic follows Maximus, one of Rome's ablest generals, who is favored by the dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius only to be cast down when the emperor's scheming son seizes power. Stripped of everything, Maximus is forced into the arena, fighting for his life to entertain the crowds. Scott stages the spectacle on a grand scale while grounding it in a tale of loss, honor, and hard-won vengeance. Viewers who savor the patient revenge of The Count of Monte Cristo or the tragic sweep of Ran will find a kindred pulse here. It suits anyone after a muscular, emotional drama built on sacrifice and defiance.
