Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this 2008 drama about Walt Kowalski, a bitter Korean War veteran whose prized 1972 Gran Torino draws him into the life of Thao Lor, a Hmong teenager who tries to steal it. What begins as hostility gradually becomes an unlikely mentorship, and Eastwood uses that arc to examine prejudice, aging and the quiet cost of a lifetime's grudges. It moves at a deliberate pace and trusts small gestures over spectacle, so it rewards viewers who like character studies with a hard shell and a soft interior. Anyone drawn to grave, morally serious American drama will find it worth their evening.
