James Gunn's 2023 Marvel adventure sends the Guardians into a mission with personal stakes, as Peter Quill, still grieving the loss of Gamora, must pull his fractured team together to defend the universe and protect one of their own. Failure, the film warns, could mean the end of the Guardians as fans know them. Gunn balances his trademark irreverent humor and needle-drop soundtrack with a more emotional register, giving the ensemble a sense of finality. Longtime followers of the trilogy will feel the weight of its farewells, while newcomers get spectacle and heart in equal measure. Those invested in these characters will find it a fitting send-off; casual viewers may want the earlier films first.
