Our take on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

David Yates strips the wizarding saga down to its bones here, trading Hogwarts corridors for windswept tents and open country. Harry, Ron and Hermione abandon their final school year to hunt the Horcruxes that anchor Voldemort's immortality, and with Dumbledore gone and Death Eaters ascendant, the fantasy adventure turns quiet, paranoid and grief-heavy. It is the most patient chapter in the series, more about frayed friendship and fear than spectacle, so newcomers should start earlier. For readers of the books and anyone who grew up alongside these characters, though, this 2010 penultimate installment rewards devotion, setting a bleak, deliberate stage for the finale to come.
