Our take on Her

Spike Jonze's 2013 romance follows a lonely writer who falls in love with an advanced AI operating system — a relationship that's tender, funny and quietly profound about connection in a screen-lit age. Beautiful and melancholy, it asks what intimacy means when one partner has no body. If its gentle sci-fi and emotional ache moved you, seek out cerebral romances and near-future dramas about love, loneliness and technology.

What the audience liked

  • Spike Jonze explores AI companionship with surprisingly nuanced emotional complexity
  • Future setting feels plausible and intimate rather than coldly dystopian or militaristic
  • Heartbreak narrative about impossible love feels contemporary and philosophically relevant

What the audience disliked

  • Romance between human and artificial intelligence may feel conceptually uncomfortable
  • Lonely protagonist archetype borders on mopey wallowing rather than active engagement
