About Hugo

Orphaned and alone except for an uncle, Hugo Cabret lives in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. Hugo's job is to oil and maintain the station's clocks, but to him, his more important task is to protect a broken automaton and notebook left to him by his late father. Accompanied by the goddaughter of an embittered toy merchant, Hugo embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of the automaton and find a place he can call home.

Our take on Hugo

Martin Scorsese steps unusually far from his crime-movie comfort zone with this 2011 family adventure set in a 1930s Paris railway station. Hugo, an orphan living in the walls and tending the clocks, guards a broken automaton and notebook left by his father, and his search for their secret pulls in a toy merchant's goddaughter. It is a gentler, more wondrous Scorsese, richly designed and openly in love with early cinema. Best suited to viewers who enjoy slow-building mystery, handsome period craft and a story about finding where you belong, rather than anyone chasing fast thrills. Families with patient older children will get the most from it.
