Our take on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Steven Spielberg's 1984 adventure, the second Indiana Jones outing, drops the whip-cracking archaeologist into India, where a desperate village begs him to recover a stolen mystical stone. His search leads him into the catacombs of an ancient palace and a secret cult scheming something monstrous. Darker and more intense than its predecessor, the film trades some of the earlier warmth for pulpy thrills, macabre imagery and breakneck momentum, from a runaway mine cart to nerve-jangling peril. It suits viewers who love old-fashioned matinee adventure with a sinister streak and don't mind the rougher edges. If you want Spielberg in full swashbuckling mode, this is a relentless, atmospheric ride.
