Our take on Insidious
James Wan's 2011 haunter earns its scares through mood and patience before it tips its hand. A family's ordinary anxieties curdle into dread when their young son slips into an unexplained coma and dark presences begin gathering in the house. When they finally call in outside help, the truth turns out to be far more intimate than a simple haunted house. Wan favors creeping suspense, sudden jolts and inventive imagery over blood, and the film's shift in the back half divides some viewers. Recommended for horror fans who like atmosphere and a strong sense of family peril, and don't mind supernatural rules explained on the fly.
