Our take on Jojo Rabbit

Taika Waititi's 2019 film sets a bold comedy-drama against World War II, following Jojo, a lonely German boy whose world shifts when he learns his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. Guided by a buffoonish imaginary Hitler, he is forced to weigh the propaganda he's absorbed against his own emerging humanity. The tone is a daring tightrope, wringing absurd comedy from a grim setting while never losing sight of the stakes. It suits viewers open to satire that pairs whimsy with real emotional weight, and who appreciate a coming-of-age story about unlearning hatred. Distinctive and tender, provided you're willing to meet its offbeat approach.
