Our take on Joker

Todd Phillips sets this crime drama-thriller in 1980s Gotham City, following a failed stand-up comedian who is pushed past his breaking point and slides into a life of crime and chaos, hardening into an infamous, psychopathic figure. The film stays close to one man's unraveling, using mood, period texture and a single wounded performance to track how isolation and humiliation curdle into violence. It's a character study more than a genre spectacle, deliberately uneasy and slow to give the audience anyone to root for. Expect a bleak, uncomfortable tone rather than escapism. It suits viewers drawn to psychological portraits of breakdown and don't need a hero at the center.
