Our take on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

J.A. Bayona takes the dinosaur franchise into darker, more gothic territory here. Three years after the park's collapse, Isla Nublar lies abandoned, until its dormant volcano threatens to wipe out the creatures still living there. Owen and Claire return to mount a rescue, a mission that soon reveals murkier human motives beneath the conservation cause. Bayona brings a real feel for suspense and creeping menace, pushing the series toward horror as much as adventure. It's a science-fiction thriller that trades some of the open-air wonder of earlier entries for confined, shadowy set pieces. Suited to viewers who want their dinosaur spectacle with genuine tension and a grimmer, more claustrophobic streak.
