Matthew Vaughn's 2010 action-crime picture follows Dave Lizewski, an overlooked high-school student and comic-book fan who decides to become a costumed superhero despite having no powers, no training and no real reason to do so. That gap between comic-book fantasy and painful reality drives the film, which pushes its premise into brash, hard-edged and often violent territory rather than gentle parody.
