Quentin Tarantino's 2003 revenge saga opens with an assassin gunned down by Bill, the ruthless boss of the killing squad she once belonged to. She survives, and the film charts the first movement of her retaliation against the circle that betrayed her. As stylized action-crime, it's less about plot than sensation: a director indulging his love of martial-arts and grindhouse cinema through choreography, chapter structure and bursts of extreme violence. It suits viewers who prize form, style and genre homage over realism or restraint, and who don't mind blood by the bucket. Newcomers should note it's deliberately the opening half of a two-part story, ending mid-momentum.
