Our take on Kingdom of Heaven

Ridley Scott returns to the historical epic with this 2005 Crusades drama, in which a grieving blacksmith named Balian is unexpectedly drawn into royalty, court intrigue and the bloody holy wars of the era. Action, adventure and history combine in a sweeping, handsomely mounted story that leans toward moral questions of faith and tolerance as much as toward the battlefield. It rewards viewers who like weighty period drama with large-scale sieges and a thoughtful, somewhat somber tone, rather than pure swordplay. Anyone drawn to Scott's grand, textured visual worlds and stories of ordinary men thrust into power will find plenty to sink into here.
