Greta Gerwig's 2017 solo directing debut captures the friction of growing up with unusual precision. Lady Bird, a headstrong, artistically minded seventeen-year-old in Sacramento, chafes against her Catholic school, her hometown and above all her mother, as she pushes toward college and a life she can't quite picture yet. The film moves in quick, funny, bittersweet fragments, and its real subject is the tangled love between a daughter and a mother who keep missing each other. Warm without turning soft, specific without turning small, it rewards viewers who like coming-of-age stories rooted in character.
