Neil Burger's 2011 thriller runs on a seductive what-if: a stalled writer swallows a top-secret smart drug that lets him tap the full reach of his mind and become a sharper, more capable version of himself. Overnight, ambition and clarity follow, but so do shadowy forces drawn to his sudden edge, and the film shades from science fiction into paranoid mystery. It is stylish and propulsive, more interested in the intoxication and cost of enhancement than in hard neuroscience. It suits viewers who want a slick, idea-driven ride about self-optimisation and its price, and it plays as a fully self-contained watch.
