Our take on Live Free or Die Hard
Len Wiseman's 2007 action thriller brings John McClane back for a fight scaled to the internet age, teaming the analog everyman cop with a young hacker to stop a ring of cyber-terrorists bent on seizing America's computer infrastructure. The pleasure is the contrast: McClane's blunt, physical resourcefulness against a faceless digital threat, delivered through large, elaborate stunts and wisecracks. It swaps the claustrophobic tension of the original for wide-open, high-gloss spectacle and a lighter tone. If you're after a slick, fast-moving popcorn thriller and enjoy the reluctant hero shrugging off impossible odds, it's confident, undemanding fun that doesn't need the earlier films to land.
