Sofia Coppola's 2003 comedy-drama-romance follows two lost souls adrift in Tokyo: a young, neglected wife accompanying her photographer husband, and a fading movie star in town to shoot a commercial. Awake at odd hours and estranged from their American lives, they drift into an unlikely companionship built on wry humor, jet-lagged melancholy and the freedom to be honest with a stranger. Little happens in plot terms, and that's the point: it's a mood piece about connection, loneliness and the space between people.
