Our take on Madagascar

This 2005 DreamWorks animated comedy sends four pampered friends from New York's Central Park Zoo tumbling into the wild after their bid for freedom lands them shipwrecked on Madagascar. Co-directed by Eric Darnell, the adventure trades zoo comforts for jungle chaos, mining laughs from spoiled city animals forced to reckon with instincts they never knew they had. The humor is fast and broad, aimed squarely at kids but sprinkled with asides for parents, and the bright, elastic animation keeps things bouncing. Families after an undemanding, energetic romp with a likeable cast and plenty of slapstick will be well served; expect silliness over depth, which is exactly the point.
