About Midsommar

Several friends travel to Sweden to study as anthropologists a summer festival that is held every ninety years in the remote hometown of one of them. What begins as a dream vacation in a place where the sun never sets, gradually turns into a dark nightmare as the mysterious inhabitants invite them to participate in their disturbing festive activities.

Our take on Midsommar

Ari Aster's 2019 folk horror follows a group of friends who travel to a remote Swedish community to observe a midsummer festival held only once every ninety years. What starts as a bright, sunlit escape slowly curdles as the hosts draw the visitors into rituals that grow steadily more disturbing. Aster trades darkness for relentless daylight, building dread through ceremony, control and grief rather than jump scares, and pairing horror with a raw drama of a fraying relationship. It rewards patience and a strong stomach; viewers who prefer atmosphere, unease and slow-burning mystery over fast frights will find it hypnotic, while the squeamish should tread carefully.
