Bennett Miller's 2011 drama tells the true-to-life story of Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane, who sets out to build a competitive baseball team on a shoestring budget. His answer is radical: rely on computer-generated statistical analysis to identify undervalued players and challenge a century of scouting instinct. More a story about ideas, ego and institutional resistance than about the game itself, the film finds its drama in boardrooms and phone calls as much as on the field. Smart, dry and understated, it rewards viewers who enjoy talky, character-driven dramas about changing how things are done, even if they've never followed baseball.
