Dan Gilroy's 2014 crime drama follows Lou Bloom, a desperate, driven outsider who muscles his way into Los Angeles crime journalism, filming accidents and violence for the morning news. Cold, nocturnal and unnervingly calm, it works as both a character study and a critique of media that rewards the most lurid footage.
