Our take on Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film drifts through Los Angeles in 1969, following fading western star Rick Dalton and his best friend and stunt double Cliff Booth as they try to survive a movie industry shifting beneath them. Dalton happens to live next door to rising actress Sharon Tate, newly married to director Roman Polanski. Blending comedy, drama and thriller, it is a leisurely, atmosphere-rich hangout picture, more interested in mood, craft and a vanishing Hollywood than in constant plot. Tarantino savors the period detail and the easy rapport between his leads. It suits patient viewers who love texture, dialogue and film history, and anyone drawn to a wistful ode to a bygone Hollywood.
