Our take on Orphan

Jaume Collet-Serra's 2009 horror-thriller preys on a particular parental dread. After the loss of their baby, a grieving couple adopts nine-year-old Esther, only to sense that the poised, unusually mature child may be hiding something far from innocent. Suspicion curdles into fear as the family unravels from within. Collet-Serra builds the tension patiently, letting doubt do much of the work before the film tightens its grip, and the domestic setting makes the menace feel uncomfortably close. Recommended for horror fans who like their scares rooted in family and psychology rather than gore, and who can stomach a genuinely unsettling premise.
