Our take on Planet of the Apes
Tim Burton's 2001 take on the ape-ruled premise drops astronaut Leo Davidson onto an uncharted planet after a violent crash, into a savage world where talking apes dominate humans and a ruthless general commands a seemingly unstoppable army. Desperate to get home, Leo becomes a reluctant catalyst for rebellion against the primate order. Burton brings striking creature design and a darker, more feral texture than you might expect, foregrounding spectacle, prosthetics and chase over sober allegory. Viewers who enjoy big-swing science-fiction adventure and inventive production design will find plenty to admire; those attached to the original's philosophical bite should adjust expectations. Approach it as a bold, visually rich reimagining on its own terms.
