Hitchcock's 1960 shocker rewrote the rules: kill your star halfway through, strand the audience at a lonely motel and let Norman Bates do the rest. The shower scene became cinema shorthand for terror, but the real dread is psychological — identity, guilt and a house with too many secrets.
