Sylvester Stallone directs and stars in this 2008 return to his most famous character, a war film with the blunt force of a thriller. Living quietly in Thailand, ex-Green Beret John Rambo reluctantly guides a group of mercenaries into war-torn Myanmar to recover Christian aid workers seized by a brutal infantry unit. There is little pretense of subtlety here: the action is close, grim, and unflinching, framed around a weary soldier who has long stopped believing violence solves anything yet knows he is built for it. Best suited to viewers who want the franchise stripped to its harshest core rather than a nostalgic reunion.
